St James Infirmary Blues

A modern version of a traditional New Orleans standard that has its roots in old english folk music - St James Infirmary tells the tale of a young man and woman being cut down in their prime as a result of morally questionable behaviour. The song was transported to American shores by the merchant sailors of the early twentieth century and was given a bluesy make over by the commentary artists of the day.

Here it is played back to us beautifully by another English export, Hugh Laurie - the 'House' actor who moonlights as a jazz pianist and blues singer from time to time. This version is from the 'Let them talk' album released in 2011. This for me is one of the best versions that I've heard.
