What's this music called? Popney?

There's a new genre of music about and I have no idea what its actually called...
So like all things, we'll just stick it in a box and slap a pop label on it.  However, I've been listening... and these ears have definately picked up on a trick.

Here in the UK, over the past few years a certain type of singer has emerged.  Simply put, they sing in a cockney accent.  Well not all of them, case in point Ed Sheeran.  However, it's not just how they sing, its what they sing about.  The subject matter is often comical, and very rough around the edges. Their style is not in anyway glamourous, well apart from Lilly Allen who is probably the ambassador for this wave of music. (Well she is all grown up now, and actually retired, (which in itself seems typically rebellious), but at the beginning of her career she had an endearing penchant for wearing dresses with Nike Air Max trainers.)

Like fashion, now the cats out the bag, people are bucking the trend and more and more of this type of music is starting to surface.  As a life long citizen of London, I think its quite cool that this unique sound is coming out.  It definately seems to mirror and document the mainstream youth here and the shenanigans they get up to.

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you cockney people that make pop music... POPNEY?  Wait a minute, that could work.
