South Africa: A country in crisis?

So far, 2013 has been a pretty grim year for the country of South Africa. Unless you have been holidaying on Mars then you will be aware of the terrible Oscar Pistorius story. The Paralympic superstar seems to have taken his famous sponsor (Nike's) 'Just Do It' slogan quite literally (alright, alright...innocent until proven guilty, but, c'mon). The dust had not even settled before another unsavoury story made the headlines. South African police brutally killing a 27 year old man, dragging him along handcuffed to the back of a van. This inhumae act was captured on film and shown throughout the world. Stories such as these have not exactly shone a positive light on a country that also has name for its astonishing high rate of crime, rape and use of fire arms.

In addition to this, with the silly furore going on in Great Britain in regards to the decidedly tedious horse meat scandal it has now transpired that South Africa has also got in on the deceitful act of substituting certain meat and hoodwinking its population.

Here, at The Chesterfield Collective, we have on very good authority that the people from S.A have been tricked into chowing down on a different kind of 'meat', to put it frankly, the people with the lovely accents have been dinning on buffalo and monkey meat.

I know that some ignorant people would retort with a: So what; they are only silly Africans - they should be accustomed to eating all types of meat - beggars can't be choosers etc etc. Well, whether it is a chimp or a ragging buffalo, for me, this is not the point. Deception is deception. The country already has enough problems.

If a local man decides to take his hard earned money to a fast food eatery and wants to eat a burger and fries this is exactly what he should be served up. Not a burger laced with traces of buffalo and monkey in it. This kind of gross deception is the type of bad practice that makes people feel downhearted and lose their minds and resort to revolting against the establishment. One could just imagine how English folk would react if there were traces of cat and pigeon meat in their burgers.

Speaking of revolting, another reason why South Africa appears to be crisis is due to the state of their baboon population. Not so long ago, English television broadcasting corporation Channel 4 aired a startling documentary entitled 'Rogue Baboon'. The title alone raised the eyebrows of an intrigued viewer. In short, this documentary was about cocksure baboons infiltrating a local suburb and running amok. They were led by a quite ferocious leader called, erm, Fred. This calculated beast had a penchant for stealing women's clothing and breaking into unattended vehicles. He would take his troops through the streets of Cape Town clambering through the open windows of petrified homeowners and basically stealing and plundering - causing unbridled havoc on a scale that had never been experienced by the people that were regularly terrorised. Think Robin Hood and his Merry Men, but with red raw butt cheeks and snarling teeth.

So, another example of a country that is facing adverse times at the moment. Fred's reign of anarchy lasted for three years until he was 'put to sleep.' It hardly fills a potential tourist with confidence knowing that alongside criminals the animals are also behaving dreadfully. Fred's legacy still lives on.

For a beautiful vibrant country that can boast many colourful things such as Nelson Mandela's amazing selection of jazzy shirts, another thing which I find hard to fathom about this land is how desperate individuals will literally steal anything. Literally, attacking or holding up people with, say, dreadlocks for example and cutting them off for another persons use. A woman who is unable to grow her hair or desires this style will actually pay for stolen locks. It actually beggars belief that this can actually happen.

Will things ever improve for this nation? Perhaps, but it won't happen over night. You cannot help but feel a sense of dismay for the people that live in the county and how they always need to be vigalant and aware of their surroundings and unlike us in England, for example, these law abiding individuals can never quite take certain issues associated with safety and security for granted.
