The essence of a city
Stylish, the epitome and essence of the word cool - but what is 'cool'? Isn't this concept a subjective thing? Perhaps... If we are to go on the basis of what the vast majority of people deem to be cool and 'hip' then Berlin has been there, done it - and always wears the t-shirt with a casual swagger.
The Germans are known for their efficiency in regards to a whole host of things. So, why not style taste and art. These features seem to be something the indigenous people understand and thoroughly respect. I suspect that it is ingrained into the DNA of the city post world war.
It is abundantly appearant that the city prides itself on its aesthetic looks. But for all the style that is extremely prevalent wherever you happen to go on the flip slide there is also a depth and rich sense of history that is as equally as important within Berlin.
I am not a historian or as knowledgeable on how this city played its part in the wars that shaped German history - but I can appreciate how over many years Berlin has kept its heritage and identity whilst allowing the youth to express themselves throughout the expansive landscape. Graffiti may not be a favoured feature of art for the purists - but art is subjective and the graffiti that is a large feature of this city seems to work well in an interesting none conformist sort of way. It screams artistic rebellion and probably has a huge fan base which I can more than understand as in my opinion it adds a character and edge to an already charismatic major city. Having seen many forms of graffiti displayed throughout the areas I have moved about in it has lead me to suspecting that the higher powers take a more liberal approach to this form of expression.
Buildings here are perfect victims for opportunist artists to run riot with creative inspiration using statuesque monuments to satisfy their need for redressing an architects already assembled body of work. For me, this is simply impressive and another facet that I love about being here.
You can not fail to be inspired by everything the senses take in as one walks through the post modern and interesting streets. It really is a feast for the eyes and perhaps the reason why Berlin is regularly visited by flocks of people wanting to indulge in creative culture that does not believe in being contrived but is a standard bearer for originality and fine taste.
