Theophilus London

Theophilus London - Aqua Malitia

Probably one of the most unconventional artists of modern times. The Brooklyn native, Theophilus London, possesses a style that is unmatched by others. His approach to music draws upon influences ranging from Biggie Smalls to Morrissey. For Theoph' it is clearly not just about the music, but a way of life and his unique form of self expression transcends into his outfit choices - which are never disappointing and always quite creative and well fashioned together. One thing that struck me about Theophilus is his quite notably versatile delivery. He seems to find room to flow in the most abstract and unpredictable musical spaces, space that would be thought of as non-occupiable by the average musician.

Although there is a strong element of lyricism to his rhyming and indeed singing - which he also excels in. It is the way in which he uses his words as an accompaniment to the melody, in the same way that a saxophonist would syncopate their way around a jazzy number such as "summertime" or "stormy weather". In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to hear a Theophilus London version of one of the aforementioned classic songs, as covering and remixing are Theophilus' piece de resistance.
