The concept of Style and Fashion

Style and Fashion, what a funny concept. The shops peddle consumer fashion, but not style. You only have to look at some of the ridiculous mannequins in the high street windows suggesting how to wear and arrange an outfit to realise that the 'people in the know' think that going wild with gay abondon, gorging on every item of clothing available is supposed to look great.

A friend of mine, (not Gok Wan) believes there is a BIG difference when it comes to style and fashion. Many may be 'fashionable', but few have genuine style (not quite a scientific fact). Style can not always be taught - it is perhaps something that you either have or simply you don't. (It's a cold, harsh world folks). So, the masses want to look 'cool' and dress in what the shops say is fashionable. Fair enough, but this just breeds clones and boring copy cats. I constantly see individuals who are not individuals but think they are, when they are dressed in a generic fashionable uniform. Skinny, skinny leg hugging jeans with Nike trainers and big jackets, Jordan's, Snap backs etc etc... So many uniforms that people choose to don. (The afore mentioned 'urban' outfits were an example, I am aware that everybody doesn't wear these clothes).

I suppose we can only adorn ourselves with what is put out there in the shops. That would lead you in theory to believing that every person who is conscious about fashion should look the part, right? Well, not quite...I would say this is not the case. Style, for me, (and my pal, not Gok) should be a reflection of your personality and tastes. And ultimately, what you feel comfortable in wearing. Is there really any point in wearing something for the sake of it, for the sake of 'fashion'. That would be pretty stupid to me. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I think it is quite easy to spot a person who has genuine style as apposed to a lemming who relentlessly follows fashion and actually has no real identity.

And with that I will make a little trip to Topman, Primark and River Island.
