A fix in time saves nine

Fixed gear bikes or Fixie's as they are commonly known are the only way to travel these days.

These bikes consist of one single gear - which means you can't coast i.e. the pedals are always in motion going round and round. The bike won't stop until you start pedalling backwards and vice versa, this is also a cool way of breaking at high speed (not that I'm encouraging that kind of behaviour).

The bikes can be customised in many ways, which I guess is one of its main draws. So, the next time you're at a flea market and see a cheap second hand bike, don't think rust on two wheels, imagine that it could be turned into a sleek fixed gear bike.

But be warned, though, they are not for the lazy at heart, one gear means a lot hard work and in the summer, especially. I think showers will be needed once every hour, on the hour.
